Business Owners: Managing a Customer Injury

March 27, 2020 | By:Neilson Marketing Services

If a customer becomes injured on company property, it can have a significant negative impact on the business owner. Any business that is open to the public has a certain level of liability regarding anything that happens to customers while on the premises. However, there are certain steps that business owners should take in the event of a customer injury.

Call Emergency Services/Provide Aid

First, ensure that all parties involved in the incident are safe and taken care of physically before going into the details that you will want to gather. If necessary, call for appropriate emergency services to help. Checking that everything is out in the open about injuries and seeking to meet everyone’s immediate needs can not only do wonders for the company image, but it is just the right thing to do.

Contact your Insurer

Contact your insurance carrier and inform them of the incident as soon as possible. Many carriers have specific time limits for coverage, depending on when they were notified of the incident. Coverage will be dependent upon your specific insurance policy, but nonetheless, the insurer must be notified of the details soon after the incident in order to properly assist you with the claim.

Documentation and Gathering Information

It is very important to document as much of customer injury accident as possible. Luckily, smartphones make this step quite easy. Also, speak with any employees that may have been in the area and any other witnesses, as their testimonies will likely be helpful.

Be sure to communicate with the person that was injured as well. When approaching the injured party, keep in mind that it is expected for the business to help them and that doing so is not an admission of fault.

After speaking with the injured party, employees, and any other witnesses, it is beneficial to be prompt in preparing your written documentation for your insurance company to help cover all your bases.

Fix the Issue and Plan Ahead

If a customer does become injured on your business property it is crucial to prevent the same issue from occurring again. Address the site of the accident accordingly and fix whatever caused the injury. Be vigilant throughout these situations to avoid further unnecessary distractions for your business. It is your responsibility to create a safe space and obtain protection for your business to remain financially secure in times such as these.
